The word is Japanese and combines two words: teri, meaning luster, and yaki, meaning grill. It is a umami, sticky sauce that is used on almost any meat or vegetable and even though grill is in the name you can use this glaze in any cooking method that you like.

STEP 1: COMBINE

First, in a bowl mix soy sauce, water, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, rice vinegar, All Purpose Seasoning and whisk until sugar is dissolved. Transfer into a zip top bag over the chicken and then marinate for two hours to overnight.

STEP 2: GRILL

Next, grill for 12 to 15 minutes until the juices run cleat and the chicken reaches 165 degrees F. on a meat thermometer. Enjoy the chicken with your favorite side dishes.

HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE AHEAD OF TIME

This marinade can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge until ready to use. Then when ready place the meat into the marinade for up to twenty four hours.

HOW TO STORE THIS RECIPE

Store in an airtight container or in a zip top bag until ready to use, keep in the refrigerator.

HOW TO FREEZE THIS RECIPE

Place the chicken in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to six months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

HOW TO REHEAT THIS RECIPE

Warm through in the oven, or in a pan or skillet on the stove top. Glazes the chicken again to lock in the moisture and the flavor.

IS TERIYAKI GLUTEN FREE?

Traditionally, teriyaki sauce is made with soy sauce, which is not gluten-free because it contains wheat, however, there are gluten free versions of soy sauce that you can utilize.

Of course, you can make a slurry with cornstarch and water to thicken the sauce or there are several other options, see here.

WHAT IS TERIYAKI SAUCE?

Teriyaki sauce is the Japanese stir fry sauce contains light soy sauce along with mirin (sweetened rice wine). The sauce can be sweetened with sugar or honey.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
