WANTED:  A little old lady to teach me how to can!

I am dying to learn how to can!  Except I can’t find anybody to teach me.  I’m not very good at reading and then doing.  I’m much more a visual learner — more hands on.  I need to find a little old lady that been canning for years that can show me what to do!

I’m growing so many great things in my garden this year and I want to be able to preserve them.  Tomatoes, broccoli, green beans, peppers, etc…

Not to mention the fruit!  We planted 31 blueberry bushes this year and I’m heading out to pick strawberries tomorrow.  I’d also love to put up some of the yummy peaches piled up in my grocery store.

Anyone have a grandma they can loan me?

Believe it or not, my boyfriend knows how to can and he cans peppers and cherries (in liquor) every year. I will keep you posted on the next canning session! Lol!

AWESOME!!! I would love to learn! I tried my hand at canning strawberry jam a few weeks ago…didn’t go too bad! Everything seems to have worked! But I’d still love to learn hands-on! Keep me posted!

      Thanks, Kristin!

Duh! Why didn’t I think to go to YouTube?! I made a beautiful embroidered Christmas stocking for my son this past year and taught myself all of the stitches by watching YouTube videos! The power of the internet! I love it!

Thanks for reminding me, Tamie! I’m going to try it this weekend!

I have the Ball Blue Book® Guide to Preserving and it’s a great book. Check out their website. They have some great tips and recipes.

I would LOVE to learn with you! And now I need to go and get that book as well.

I’m a hands on learner more than a book learner as well.

Deanne — As I learn, I’ll be sure to post what’s going on…I’m excited to know that there are others that want to know how to can too!

Does it have to be a little old lady? I can all the time–We put up 75 quarts of tomatoes last year. I went to Lancaster and bought tons of peaches and made and canned peach pie filling and peaches, same things with blueberries. It really isn’t that difficult to do–I highly recommend the blue Ball book of canning–It cost about 10 dollars and is illustrated.

Nope, doesn’t have to be an old lady! I just assumed that since canning was a dying art, that the only person that could teach me would be upwards of 70 years old! 🙂

I think I have the Ball book in my collection…I’ll have to double check. I’m just such a hands-on learner.

Thanks for the positive encouragement though…I think I might give it a try! I can’t wait!
