Instructions
Spread apples in an even layer in a 13x9 pan.
In a medium bowl, combine the sugar, flour and cinnamon.
Distribute the mixture evenly over the apples. Pour water into the pan.
To prepare topping, combine all of the topping ingredients in a medium bowl.
Mix until the texture becomes crumbly.
Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
Christina's Notes
Use Firm Apples:
Granny Smith holds its shape through a 45 minute bake without turning to sauce.
Cover Edge to Edge:
Exposed apples dry out, so spread the topping across the whole pan.
Do Not Skip the Water:
The quarter cup keeps the filling from drying during the long bake.
Watch for Bubbling:
A brown top alone is not doneness. Look for bubbles at the pan edges.
Rest Before Serving:
Ten minutes lets the filling set so it scoops instead of running.
