Lawry’s Seasoned Salt

This homemade salt recipe tastes just like Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, a product you may have seen at your local grocery store or favorite restaurant.

Lawry’s Seasoned Salt was invented in 1938 by Lawrence Frank, who co-owned a high-end restaurant called Lawry’s The Prime Rib- named after the only item on the menu. When customers wanted more flavor on their prime ribs, Frank combined salt, sugar, turmeric, onion powder, and garlic powder to create a topping so popular that people would steal shakers of it from the restaurant.

Today, Lawry’s Season Salt is commonly used on potato dishes, like French fries, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, and hash browns- everything but the prime rib steak it was invented for.

Expert Tips for Making Seasoned Salt

I’ve been using this gluten-free seasoned salt to flavor so many things. Meat, such as chicken, vegetables like broccoli and so many other recipes to up the flavor profile.

  • Food Processor: If you can’t locate superfine sugar, you can place regular white granulated sugar in a food processor or coffee grinder to make your own.
  • Powdered Sugar: Powdered sugar is NOT the same as superfine sugar. Do not use in place of superfine sugar for this recipe.
  • Spices and Seasonings: If you want to add in some extra seasonings, a tablespoon of lemon or lime zest, chipotle, black pepper, or rosemary are all great options. Taco seasoning also works great in a pinch.
