    Chocolate Microwave Cake Ingredient Notes

A bottle of chocolate milk, bowls of flour and sugar, and a sprinkle of chocolate chips create the perfect setting for a quick chocolate chip mug cake on a light surface.
    • All Purpose Flour: Use 1/4 cup of flour.
    • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: Cocoa powder gives the cake its chocolate flavor.
    • Baking Powder: Baking powder helps the cake rise in the microwave.
    • Chocolate Milk: Use your favorite brand of chocolate milk, such as TruMoo.

See the recipe card below for a complete list of the ingredients with measurements.

Easy Chocolate Mug Cake Prep Ahead Suggestions

    • Dry Ingredients: Mix all the dry ingredients in a sandwich bag and have ready to add the wet ingredients.

Special Equipment Needed for the Best Chocolate Chip Mug Cake

    • Microwave: This mug recipe can be cooked in the microwave, so it’s super easy to make.
    • Mug: Make a chocolate cake in the microwave using a coffee mug. Make sure it’s microwave safe.

    Pro Tip

Use a microwave-safe mug that’s slightly larger than the recipe calls for. This will give the batter room to expand without overflowing. Additionally, a larger mug will help to ensure even cooking and prevent the cake from burning.

This is our favorite chocolate cake you can make in the microwave. Mug cake takes only a few minutes to make, and is full of melted chocolate chips and delicious flavor. This popular recipe is made without eggs, and unlike a traditional chocolate cake, you don’t even need to bake it. Serve this easy recipe with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top.

Follow the steps below to learn how to make this recipe for chocolate chip mug cake.

These are the basic steps for making microwave chocolate chip mug cake. Refer to the full, printable recipe card below for detailed instructions.

    1. Combine Ingredients

Add the dry ingredients- flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, and salt- to a microwave-safe mug; stir to combine. Then, stir in chocolate milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.

    2. Microwave for 1 minute

Add the chocolate chips, then microwave on high for a cook time of one minute and 10 seconds. (Microwaves are different sizes, so make sure you adjust the cook time to your own microwave; we used a 1000 watt microwave.) Carefully remove mug from the microwave, as the cake comes out hot.

    How to Store Leftovers

    • Storing: Mug cake is best eaten once it cools. As this is a single serving dessert, you can eat it all in one sitting.

Easy Chocolate Chip Mug Cake Variations and Substitutions

    • Chocolate Chips: Use different flavors of chocolate chips, such as dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate.
    • Unsalted Butter: Use melted butter instead of vegetable oil in this gooey mug cake.
    • Brown Sugar: Use brown sugar instead of white sugar, or vanilla bean paste instead of vanilla extract.
    • Mint: Add some mint extract for a minty flavor.
    • Candies: Add in candies, like mini M&Ms or caramel bits.

    Microwave Mug Cake Recipe FAQs

What Can I Serve with this Recipe?

Serve this recipe with chocolate covered Rice Krispie treats, chocolate peanut butter cookies, and homemade hot chocolate mix.

Why is my Mug Cake Rubbery?

If your mug cake is rubbery, you may have overmixed the batter or not added enough wet ingredients. It also may have been microwaved for too long; make sure you adjust the microwave time to the wattage of your microwave.

    Can I Use Regular Milk?

Regular milk will not work as well; it’s best to use chocolate milk for the best texture. However, you can try flavored almond milk or soy milk for a non-dairy milk option.
