  • Steak: For making these cheesesteak philly subs, it is best to use ribeye steak that is cut very thinly. For the thinly sliced steak, skirt steak or top sirloin beef will work too. Most grocery stores will have different options to chose from in the meat section.

  • Mushrooms – In addition or in stead of the peppers and onions you can sliced mushrooms.
  • Extra Cheese – Feel free to add extra provolone cheese slices or swap in your favorite type of cheese such as swiss or white american cheese.
  • Chicken Cheesesteak – Try making chicken cheese steaks by using thin slices chicken in place of steak.
  • BBQ Sauce – To switch up the flavors from a typically philly cheesesteak trying drizzling some bbq or buffalo sauce on your sub.

How to Make Cheesesteak Hoagie

Preparing  the peppers, onions and meat for the sandwich.

STEP 1: PREP THE MEAT

First thinly sliced meat, unless you are using pre-sliced. Season with salt, garlic powder and black pepper. Then set aside.

STEP 2: SAUTE PEPPERS + ONIONS

In a small bowl add pressed or minced garlic to butter and mix until incorporated. Melt butter and add the garlic to hot skillet over medium-high heat and sauté onions and peppers. Once the onions are translucent and the peppers have softened remove from skillet.

STEP 3: BROWN THE MEAT

Add a drizzle of oil to the skillet then add the thinly sliced meat and cook until the meat has fully browned.

STEP 4: SECTION OFF

Then add back the onion and peppers, mix with the meat until evenly combined. Section the meat mixture into 4 even portions.

STEP 5: ADD THE CHEESE

Place 2 slices of provolone cheese onto each section. Cover your skillet with a lid for 1-2 minutes or until the cheese is melty.  

STEP 6: ASSEMBLE

Add the meat and cheese to the bottoms of the rolls. Add mayo or other desired toppings of choice.

To make this steak and cheese recipe ahead of time, cook the peppers, onions and meat and store in an airtight container. When it comes time to eat heat up in a skillet and then add the cheese.

Store the leftovers of steak n cheese filling in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

HOW TO FREEZE THIS RECIPE

You can freeze your leftover philly subs, but hold off on assembling and freeze the steak and vegetables in airtight container separate from the sub roll or bun.

HOW TO REHEAT THIS RECIPE

Reheat steak and cheese on a pan over medium heat or in the microwave then add to a sub roll. Or wrap in foil and bake in the oven in a baking dish.
