- Efficiency: The air fryer cuts down cooking time by about 20–30% compared to a traditional oven.
- Flavor Delivery: Those thin slices act as “pockets” that trap garlic butter, herbs, and cheese right where you want them.

How Do I Slice the Potatoes Without Cutting All the Way Through?
I like to place chopsticks on either side of the potato on my cutting board. Slice the potato until you hit the chopsticks, and you should still end up with the potato in one piece.

Prep Ahead Suggestions for this Easy Air Fryer Recipe
Preparing steps in a recipe ahead of time can be the best way to go to be able to make it and enjoy it whenever you’re ready. These cheesy Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes look fancy, but are so easy to make!
- Cut the Potatoes: You can slice potatoes up to 24 hours in advance. Store them in a bowl of cold water in the fridge to prevent browning (oxidation). Just make sure to pat them completely dry before air frying.
- Shred the Cheese: For the best taste and meltability, shred your own cheese.
Alternate Cooking Methods to Make Hasselback Baked Potatoes
This crispy golden brown potatoes recipe is great in the air fryer, but you can also make it in the oven or on a grill.
- Standard Oven: Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 45–60 minutes, depending on size of the potatoes. Larger potatoes will need to cook longer than smaller ones.
- Grill: Wash and dry the potatoes then slice. Wrap the bottom in foil and cook on indirect heat for a smoky finish.
Store, Reheat and Use Leftover Air Fryer Potatoes
- Store: Keep leftover Hasselback potatoes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Reheat: Skip the microwave, as it makes them soggy. Reheat Hasselback potatoes in a single layer back in the air fryer at 350°F for 4-5 minutes to restore the golden brown crispy edges.
- Leftovers: Chop them up and throw them in a skillet for the best breakfast hash you’ve ever had. You can also add to soups or stews.
Common Questions About Cooking Hasselback Potatoes
No. I prefer to keep my baked potato skins on but you could peel the potatoes first if you really don’t like the skins.
If your potato is still hard in the middle, it needs to cook longer. Start with adding an extra 5 minutes and check for doneness. A fully cooked potato should allow a fork to pretty easily slide in.
Expert Tips for Making Potatoes in an Air Fryer
- The Double Brush: Brush with oil/butter at the start, then brush again halfway through. As the potato cooks, the slices “fan out,” allowing you to get flavor deep inside.
- Size Matters: Try to pick potatoes that are uniform in size so they all finish cooking at the same time.
- Don’t Overcrowd: Hot air needs to circulate around each potato to make sure the potatoes are tender inside and crisp outside.
- Serve With: Serve with Grilled Boneless Pork Chops with Garlic and Rosemary, Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus or Balsamic Grilled Skirt Steak.
