The caramelization process brings out the natural sweetness of the onions and is a compliment to so many of my favorite dishes. You can even save leftovers in ice cubs trays to add to your onion recipes (a quick hack used by many home cooks when they don’t have the patience to make again from scratch).

Caramelized onions are one of my favorite condiments.  As the onions cook down and become sweet and caramel-y.  And, your kitchen fills with an amazing aroma.

These onions would be incredible on so many things…Skillet Mac & Cheese, Steak Subs and my Jack Daniels Whiskey Burger.

You can make these onions ahead of time and stash them in the fridge.  When you’re ready to use them, just warm on the stove and add a splash of water to perk them up.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 inch yellow onions, sliced 1/4 thick
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions
 

  • Melt butter and onions in a large skillet over medium high heat.
  • Stir in brown sugar and salt; add onions and stir for 5 minutes.
  • Turn heat down to medium-low and cook onions for 40 minutes.

    There are no shortcuts to caramelized onions. I tried this recipe for a pizza topping & it was mushy & tasted awful.

    • I have made this recipe a lot. The video is very helpful, the directions have to be followed exactly. It really does work! I promise.
