Why the name Duck Fart?
The duck fart was invented in the 80s by a bartender at a bar called the Peanut Farm in Anchorage, Alaska, and is also known as the Alaskan Duck shot (if you don’t want to call it a Duck Fart). Allegedly, one of the first customers who tried it exclaimed it “tasted like a duck fart.”
As the shot has a creamy texture with notes of coffee, Irish cream, and whiskey, we can assume that the customer wasn’t speaking from experience. Whatever the case, you can now order a Duck Fart in bars across Alaska, as this shot is to the state as a margarita is to Mexico.
Ingredient Notes to Make a Layered Shot
The taste of this Duck Fart shot has notes of coffee and cream due to the Kahlua and Baileys in it, along with a good amount of whiskey. This shot is really strong, so make sure to drink responsibly.
- Kahlua: Kahlua is a coffee liqueur from Mexico, and is a common ingredient in many layered shots.
- Baileys: Bailey’s Irish cream liqueur gives this shot its texture. If you want, you can use another Irish cream.
- Jack Daniels: Jack Daniels whiskey is a popular choice for this recipe.

Expert Tips for Making This Duck Fart Drink Recipe
- Chill: Always use chilled ingredients for the best layering effect. Pre-chill your shot glasses in the freezer for a few minutes before assembling the drink.
- Use a Spoon: Use a bar spoon to slowly pour each layer over the back of the spoon. This helps the liquids flow gently and prevents them from mixing too much.
- Density Matters: Pour the ingredients in order of density, starting with the heaviest (Kahlua) and ending with the lightest (whiskey).
- The original shot used Crown Royal Canadian whiskey as the final layer. You can use any whiskey you prefer.
- Pour Slowly: It’s important that the spoon isn’t held too high above the glass or the liquid already in the glass or it will mix the ingredients. It’s also important you pour it slowly. Too much weight at once will mix it as well.
- Don’t Mix: You’re not suppose to mix these ingredients before taking the shot. The top two layers will look like they’re mixing a bit; this is normal.
