Prep Ahead Suggestions for the Casserole
I like to prepare ingredients ahead of time so that I don’t have to do all of the steps at once when I’m making dinner.
- Cook the Ground Beef: Cook and season the ground beef mixture completely, including the diced onions if using. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Prepare the “Special Sauce”: Mix all the ingredients for the Big Mac special sauce ahead of time. Store it in a sealed jar or container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- Assemble and Refrigerate (Unbaked): You can assemble the entire casserole in the baking dish. Cover tightly with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to bake, remove from the fridge and bake as directed, adding an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time to ensure it heats through.
- Partial Assembly: Cook the beef and make the sauce. On the day of, simply layer everything into the casserole dish and bake. Allow the casserole to cool.
Alternate Cooking Methods for this Easy Tater Tot casserole
Make this recipe another way by using your crock pot or grill. You can even use muffin tins to make smaller casseroles.
- Slow Cooker (Beef Layer Only): You can cook the seasoned ground beef mixture in a slow cooker on low for 2-3 hours. Then transfer it to an oven-safe dish, add cheese and tater tots, and bake to finish.
- Individual Portions (Muffin Tins): Assemble the casserole in large muffin tins for single servings. This will significantly reduce baking time (around 20-25 minutes).
- Grill/Smoker (Indirect Heat): If you have a large grill or smoker capable of maintaining a consistent indirect temperature (around 375°F/190°C), you can cook the casserole there. Cover loosely with foil and bake until hot and bubbly, removing foil for the last 10-15 minutes to crisp tots.
How to Store, Reheat and Use Leftovers
- Storage: Let the casserole cool completely. Cover tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or transfer to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Reheating: There are a couple ways to easily reheat the casserole.
- Oven: For the best results and to re-crisp the tater tots, reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-25 minutes, or until heated through and the tater tots are crispy again. You might want to cover it with foil for the first part of reheating to prevent over-browning, then remove the foil for the last few minutes.
- Microwave: Individual portions can be microwaved on high for 1-2 minutes, or until heated through. Be aware that the tater tots will likely lose their crispiness and become softer in the microwave.
- Air Fryer: For small portions, the air fryer can quickly reheat and re-crisp the tots. Place a single layer in the basket at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.
- Using Leftover Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole : Turn leftovers into other dishes to enjoy them again.
- Big Mac Bowls: Serve reheated leftovers over a bed of fresh shredded lettuce with extra special sauce.
- Stuffed Bell Peppers: Scoop the beef mixture (without the tots) into halved bell peppers and bake. Top with cheese.
- Quesadillas/Wraps: Use the beef mixture as a filling for quesadillas or warm wraps.

Expert Tips for Hamburger and Tater Tot Casserole Recipe
- Drain the Grease: After cooking the ground beef, thoroughly drain any excess grease. This prevents a greasy casserole and soggy tater tots.
- Season Generously: Don’t be shy with the seasonings for the ground beef. That’s where a lot of the “Big Mac” flavor comes from. A pinch of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and a touch of salt and pepper works wonders.
- Even Tater Tot Layer: Arrange the tater tots in a single, even layer on top. This ensures they all get crispy. Overlapping too much can lead to undercooked or soggy tots.
- Don’t Forget the Pickles: Chopped dill pickles are crucial for the Big Mac tang. Mix some into the beef layer and offer more as a topping.
- Freshness Matters: While some ingredients can be prepped, adding fresh shredded lettuce and extra “special sauce” just before serving truly elevates the experience.
- Rest Before Serving: Let the casserole sit for 5-10 minutes after removing it from the oven. This allows the cheese to set slightly, making it easier to scoop and serve.
- Serve this Recipe With: Serve with Elote Salad (Mexican Street Corn Salad), Apple Carrot Slaw or Air Fryer Pickles.

Hi Christina, I was thinking about making your Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole but I got confused with your ingredients and directions. You have 1/4 cup mayo listed, but no where in the directions does it say to add it or when to add it. Do we add it in the beef mixture once cooked or is there a mistake in the list? Could I please get clarification? Would really like to try this.
Thanks,
Dorothy
The mayo is part of the sauce. If you look in the recipe card at the bottom of the post it is listed in the sauce. You will combine it with the other sauce ingredients to make it.
Hi again, I see that there is a 1/2 cup mayo in the sauce, but where does the 1/4 cup mayo that you have listed under the 2 tsp All Purpose Seasoning in the list go? So, I’m guessing there is no 1/4 cup mayo in with the meat mixture. Is that correct?
2 pounds Lean ground beef
▢2 teaspoons All Purpose Seasoning
▢¼ cup Mayo
