Why this Big Mac Casserole Recipe is a Keeper

I love this easy recipe because it’s so easy. Big Mac casserole recipes take all your favorite burger flavors and turns it into an easy weeknight meal that the whole family will love.

  • Comfort Food with a Twist: It delivers all the nostalgic, satisfying, classic Big mac taste (beef, special sauce and cheese, pickles) in a warm, hearty casserole form. It’s familiar yet novel.
  • Family Friendly Recipe: This savory casserole is almost universally loved, especially by those who enjoy fast food-inspired meals. It’s an excellent way to get kids (and adults!) excited about dinner.
  • Easy Weeknight Meal: Despite its robust flavors of a big mac, it’s typically straightforward to assemble, often using common pantry staples and requiring minimal hands-on time once in the oven.
  • Budget-Friendly: Ground beef is an economical protein, and the other ingredients are generally inexpensive, making it a great meal for feeding a crowd without breaking the bank.
  • One-Dish Wonder (Mostly): While some components are cooked separately, the final dish bakes together in one casserole dish, simplifying both cooking and cleanup. It’s a big mac in casserole form!

What’s in Big Mac Sauce and Can I Just Use Store-Bought?

A spoon of the delicious ground beef one pot meal.

If you wanted to, you could use a store-bought sauce. I like to make my homemade big mac sauce with mayo, Dijon, relish, and a variety of seasonings. You could also make your own burger sauce with mayo, ketchup and yellow mustard.

Fun Fact about Big Mac

The Big Mac was originally called the “Aristocrat”—but that name didn’t quite click with customers. It was a 21-year-old McDonald’s secretary named Esther Glickstein Rose who came up with the name “Big Mac,” and it stuck like special sauce on a sesame seed bun.

Ingredient Notes for the Special Sauce and Casserole Dish

Cheese, beef, pickles, lettuce and ingredients for the dish.
  • Juicy Ground Beef: I like using lean ground beef to cut out some of the unnecessary grease.
  • Onion: You will need a yellow onion to make this recipe. You could also use a white onion if you prefer.
  • Hashbrowns: Using frozen hashbrowns is an easy way to get the potato base.

Variations and Substitutions to Make Big Mac Casserole

Easy cheeseburger casserole recipes are super easy to customize to make it your own. Sometimes when I make the casserole, I use different ingredients to experiment with flavors.

  • Different Meat: Use ground turkey or ground chicken as leaner alternatives to browned ground beef. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Tater Tots/Fries: A layer of crispy tater tots, or add diced potatoes or seasoned fries instead of hashbrowns for a different texture.
  • Cheese: Use a mix of shredded cheddar cheese and Monterey Jack for a classic burger cheese pull.
  • Bacon: Make it bacon cheeseburger casserole with the addition of bacon bits.
  • Sauce: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to your special sauce.  A tiny dash of liquid smoke or smoked paprika in the beef or sauce.
  • Mini: Bake in a muffin tin for individual Big Mac “cupcakes” or mini-casseroles.

Prep Ahead Suggestions

Preparing ingredients ahead of time can help to save me time and kitchen space when it comes to making the recipe.

  • Cook Ground Beef: Brown the ground beef with diced onion (if using) and drain any excess fat. Once cooled, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • Secret Sauce: Whisk together all the ingredients for the Big Mac special sauce. Store it in a sealed jar or container in the fridge for up to a week. The flavors will meld beautifully.
  • Slice Pickles/Onions: Dice or slice your dill pickles and any fresh onion you plan to add as a topping. Store them in separate airtight containers in the fridge.
  • Grate Cheese: Grate your cheese blend ahead of time and store it in an airtight bag or container in the refrigerator.
  • Full Assembly (Unbaked): You can fully assemble the casserole (without the final lettuce layer) in the baking dish, cover tightly with plastic wrap or foil, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Let it sit at room temperature for 15-30 minutes before baking, and you might need to add 5-10 minutes to the baking time.

Alternate Cooking Methods to Love this Recipe

You can add a brief intro paragraph here to include more LSI keywords from the SEO optimizer tool. Remember to keep paragraphs short (1-2 sentences). Also, use full sentences with the bullet points below. If you can link to another IAK recipe naturally, do it.

  • Slow Cooker: Brown the beef first, then layer ingredients in the slow cooker. Cook on low for 4–6 hours or high for 2–3 hours. Add cheese near the end so it melts perfectly.
  • Instant Pot / Pressure Cooker: Sauté beef and onions using the sauté function. Add broth, potatoes or pasta, and seasonings. Pressure cook for 3–5 minutes, then stir in cheese and toppings after releasing pressure.

How to Store, Reheat and Use Leftover Beef and Potato Casserole

  • Storing: Once cooled, make sure the casserole is an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Feel free to also freeze it. Tightly wrap individual portions or the entire casserole in plastic wrap, then foil. You can also use freezer-safe airtight containers. Label with the date and freeze for up to 2-3 months.
  • Reheating: Microwave (Best for single servings): Cover loosely with a microwave-safe lid or damp paper towel to retain moisture. Heat on high for 1-3 minutes, stirring halfway, until heated through to 165°F (74°C).
  • Oven (Best for larger portions or crisping): Preheat oven to 300-350°F (150-175°C). Place leftover casserole in an oven-safe dish, possibly covered with foil to prevent drying out. Heat for 15-25 minutes, or until thoroughly heated through (165°F internal temperature). For a crispier topping, remove foil for the last few minutes.
  • Using Leftovers: Big Mac Tacos/Burritos: Scoop the casserole into warm tortillas and add fresh shredded lettuce, extra pickles, and a drizzle of special sauce.
  • Stuffed Bell Peppers: Hollow out bell peppers, fill with leftover casserole, top with a little extra cheese, and bake until heated through and peppers are tender.

Recipe FAQS

What Kind of Pickles should I use for the Sauce?

Dill pickles are highly recommended for that classic Big Mac tang. Sweet pickles will significantly alter the flavor profile.

Can I use Ground Turkey or Chicken instead of Beef?

Yes, ground turkey or chicken can be used for a leaner version. However, some argue that beef provides the most authentic Big Mac flavor. If using poultry, ensure good seasoning to enhance the taste.

Why is my Beef Dry?

Cook ground beef just until browned to prevent it from becoming dry and crumbly.

Expert Tips for Making Keto Big Mac Casserole

  • Drain Fat Thoroughly: After browning the ground beef, drain off all excess fat. This prevents your casserole from being greasy and heavy.
  • Don’t Skimp on the Sauce: The creamy Big Mac sauce recipe is arguably the star! Make sure you have enough to generously coat the beef mixture and for drizzling on top.
  • Layer with Care: Evenly layer the components to ensure every spoonful gets a good mix of classic flavors and textures.
  • Freshness at the End: The pop of fresh shredded lettuce and diced pickles added after baking is crucial for mimicking the Big Mac experience. Don’t bake them!
  • Taste and Adjust: Taste your “special sauce” before adding it to the casserole. Adjust sweetness, tanginess, or spice as needed.
  • Rest Before Serving: Like many casseroles, letting it rest for 5-10 minutes after coming out of the oven allows it to set slightly and makes serving easier.
  • Toppings: The low carb recipe tells you to top the casserole with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sauce and pickles, but you can use whatever your favorite burger toppings are.
  • Big Mac Salad: Make it a salad by omitting the potatoes and using lettuce instead.
  • Serve With: Try other recipes like Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes with Russet potatoes, Veal Cheeseburger Macaroni, Best Burger Sauce or Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole.

  • Top with shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, chopped pickles and drizzle remaining Big Mac Sauce over top.

Christina’s Notes

  • Drain Ground Beef: Prevents sogginess and keeps flavors balanced.
  • Use a Hot Oven: A preheated oven crisps up the tots and melts the cheese quickly.
  • Add Fresh Toppings at the End: Lettuce, tomato, and pickle go on after baking for best texture and flavor.
  • Double the Sauce: It’s that good—make extra for drizzling!
  • Crisp the Tots First: Bake the potatoes alone for 10–15 minutes before adding the rest of the casserole ingredients to keep them crispy.
