My family and I recently visited Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown, PA. My mom used to take us there every summer when I was a kid. I have such great memories of spending hot summer days splashing away on the waterslides and spending the evenings twirling around on the amusement park rides.
This year, we thought it would be fun to take my 11 year old son on his first Dorney Park Wildwater Kingdom adventure.
The park was extremely clean and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful. I loved all of the pretty flowers and trees throughout the parks.
The park had all of the classic amusement park rides that you would expect. I was impressed with the number of roller coasters and thrill rides (we love them!).
I believe I counted six all together. They also have Planet Snoopy for smaller children, too.
I compiled a list of tips to ensure that you have an amazing trip toDorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom too.
Insider Tips for Visiting Dorney Park Wildwater Kingdom
TIP: You can purchase Dorney Park tickets online. Buying your tickets on Dorney’s website ahead of time will save money, plus you’ll have access to some great bundle deals that are only available on their website. You can also get meal plans (including tickets to the Summer Culinary Series), cabana rentals and other goodies there.
TIP: Cut to the front of the line. We splurged and purchased the Fast Lane Plus passes. These are wristbands that allow you to bypass the regular lines on more than 25 of the amusement attractions PLUS the most popular waterpark attractions.
We visited Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom on a weekend and it was crazy busy. But, because we had Fast Lane passes, we didn’t have to wait in any lines. We just walked up to the attraction got on. We were able to ride all of the rides we wanted to several times – my son even rode some of them 8-10 times! This was definitely worth every penny – no one wants to spend their day waiting in line in the hot sun.
TIP: Upgrade your parking. Parking is not included with your park admission tickets. When we arrived at the parking gate, the attendant asked us if we wanted to upgrade our parking for $5. The upgrade allows you to park in the very front of the parking lot, right in front of the entrance to both parks. After a long day at the park (we were there from open until close), it was a relief to go right to our car and not have to trudge through the parking when we were tired. It’s also great if you want to go back to your car during your visit. We stashed our towels and bathing suits in the car when we were finished in the waterpark.
TIP: Bring two tote bags with you to the water park. This is a tip I learned from my mom. We always packed two bags for the waterpark. We used one tote bag to stash our regular clothes and personal items in an on-site locker. The other tote bag was for our towels, sunblock, etc. We kept this tote bag on one of the chairs in Wildwater Kingdom. This way, we could easily reapply sunblock or dry off without going back and forth to the locker.
TIP: Purchase the souvenir bottle. This is a very affordable way to stay hydrated all day. You can purchase one for as little as $10.99 and you get free refills all day long throughout both parks.
TIP: Wear water shoes in Wildwater Kingdom. The concrete in the waterpark can get very hot during the day. Water shoes will help your feet be more comfortable.
TIP: Protect your cell phone. If you want to keep your cell phone with you at Wildwater Kingdom, make sure you keep it protected. Pick up a cellphone carrying dry bag to keep your phone from getting wet.
TIP: Stay in your bathing suit for Thunder Canyon and Thunder Creek Mountain. You will get wet on both of these rides. And, by wet, I mean DRENCHED. There is no way to stay dry. Dorney Park’s rules prohibit guests from wearing bathing suits in the amusement park. However, they make an exception for Thunder Canyon (the wild river rapids ride) and Thunder Creek Mountain (the log flume ride). There is a quick entry to these rides on the far side of Wildwater Kingdom. My husband even brought an extra tank top to wear so he felt more comfortable.
TIP: Leave Wildwater Kingdom a little earlier in the afternoon to avoid long lines at Dorney Park. Because we had the Fast Lane Plus bands, we were able to go on all of the rides (several times) in Wildwater Kingdom very quickly. We headed out of Wildwater Kingdom by 3:30 PM, made a quick stop at our car to drop off our towels and bathing suits, and headed over to Dorney Park. The lines for the attractions were fairly short because most people were still in Wildwater Kingdom.
TIP: Purchase the All Day Dining plan. This is an amazing deal. Every 90 minutes, you can go to one of the participating restaurants inside the park and get an entree and a side all for one low price. This is a great deal!
TIP: Check out Dorney Park’s Summer Culinary Series. Every Saturday & Sunday during Summer 2017, Dorney Park offers all you can eat meals prepared by Chef Malo in their brand new Parkside Pavilion catering facility giving guests the ultimate culinary experience.
The pavilion was beautiful. There was plenty of seating and clean tables to eat and relax. We even had a visitor stop by for a quick hello!
Themes include Pitmaster’s Rib Fest, Tex-Mex Festival, Hawaiian Luau and Summer Clam Bake. Meals are served from 5:30pm to 8pm in the Parkside Pavilion. Check the website for more details.
My family loved the Pitmaster’s Rib Fest when we visited the park. The buffet was filled with fall-off-the-bone tender ribs (there were two varieties to choose from), burgers, hotdogs and all of the sides you would expect at a BBQ.
If there’s one thing my guys love, it’s ribs. I think they ate until they had the meat sweats. Afterall, nothing says you have a full belly, like a plate of rib bones.
We had such a great time atDorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. We’re already counting down the days until we go again!
