Why this Sweet and Spicy BBQ Sauce Recipe is a Keeper

I love this BBQ sauce because it’s quick and easy and full of natural flavor. It’s super delicious and is the perfect BBQ sauce to make for summer barbecues.

  • Quick and Easy: Whip it up in 10 minutes—no simmering for hours!
  • Customizable Heat: Make it mild, fiery, or anywhere in between.
  • Pantry Staple Ingredients: Nothing fancy needed.
  • So Much Flavor: Smoky, sweet, tangy, and spicy all in one. With bits of spice.

Can I Make it Less Spicy?

A close up of the spoon holding the sauce.

Yes! Just reduce the cayenne or chili powder, or leave them out entirely. You can also use smoked paprika for flavor without the heat.

Pro Tip for Homemade BBQ Sauce

If your sauce is too thick after simmering, thin it out with a little water, chicken broth, or even more vinegar (depending on the desired tang).

Ingredient Notes For Sweet and Smoky BBQ Sauce

To make this sweet BBQ sauce recipe, there are just a few easy ingredients that are needed.

Get the full printable recipe with specific measurements and directions in the recipe card below.

Smoked paprika, apple cider, brown sugar.
  • Brown Sugar: Adds a rich, molasses like sweetness.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: For balanced tang and acidity.
  • Cayenne Pepper: Packs the heat—use more to make a sauce that’s spicier.
  • Smoked Paprika: Adds a smoky backbone to the sauce. Use regular paprika if you want it less smoky.

Variations and Substitutions for BBQ Sauce

This easy homemade BBQ sauce is easy to customize. I like to take it to the next level by using different ingredients or trying different flavors.

  • Add Bourbon: A splash gives it a deeper, more complex flavor.
  • Swap the Heat: Use hot sauce, chili flakes, or chipotle powder.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: I’ve used a berry vinegar because I didn’t have any apple cider vinegar before. It will give a fruitier flavor.
  • Make it Honey-Sweet: Add a little honey to make it sweeter. A little apple juice or pineapple juice concentrate gives the sauce a sweet, fruity flavor.

Prep Ahead Suggestions for Sweet and Spicy Homemade BBQ Sauce

Preparing ahead of time can help save time and kitchen space when it comes to making the better than store-bought sweet baby ray’s.

  • Make Ahead for Parties: Double the recipe and refrigerate—it keeps for weeks.
  • Mix Dry Spices in Advance: Store a “BBQ blend” to shave off prep time.

Alternate Cooking Methods

Instead of using the stove top, there are a couple other ways to make this classic recipe.

  • Slow Cooker: Mix ingredients and heat on low for 1 hour.
  • Grill Side Burner: Make it fresh while your meat cooks.

How to Store, Reheat and Use Leftovers

  • Storing: Keep in a sealed jar or another airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
  • Reheating: Warm gently on the stove if it thickens too much.
  • Using Leftovers: Slather on your favorite rib recipe, on BBQ chicken pizza, or stir into baked beans.

Expert Tips for Making Sweet and Spicy Sauce Recipe

  • Don’t Skip the Simmer: Even a short simmer helps blend the flavors.
  • Balance is Key: Taste and tweak with sugar, vinegar, or spice as needed.
  • Veggies: Sometimes I like to include minced jalapeños, celery, onion and garlic.
  • Label Your Sauce: Especially if you store multiple batches—write the date!
  • Ketchup: To omit any unnecessary corn syrup, feel free to use tomato sauce or tomato paste and distilled vinegar in its place.
  • Other Flavors: Change up the flavor by using other ingredients such as a teaspoon onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, chopped jalapeno or ground cloves.
  • Smokey: Add a little bit of liquid smoke to enhance the natural smoke flavor.
  • Serve this Recipe: Serve with Grilled Pork Chops, Slow Cooker Pulled Pork or Grilled Chicken Wings.
