How to Make Gooey Chocolate Rice Krispies Treats
These are the basic steps for making Rice Krispie treats with lots of chocolate. Refer to the full, printable recipe card below for detailed instructions.
1. Melt the Butter Over Low Heat
Grease an 8×8 square pan with butter or cooking spray, or line with parchment paper. Then, place 1 1/2 teaspoon of salted butter and 20 marshmallows in a medium saucepan or large pot. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently until the butter and marshmallows and stir in the chocolate chips until melted to add chocolate flavor.
2. Add the Rice Krispies
Remove the marshmallow mixture from heat and fold in two cups of Rice Krispies cereal. In a separate pan, melt another 20 marshmallows and 1 1/2 teaspoon of butter. Stir until the marshmallows are completely melted. Remove from heat and add another 2 cups of Rice cereal.
3. Blend the Strawberries
Place the second Rice Krispies mixture over the melted chocolate chip mixture. Blend strawberries in a food processor until finely ground. In another pan, make another Rice Krispies mixture and mix in the strawberries. Add food coloring if desired.
4. Layer the Rice Krispies Mixture into the Pan
Place the strawberry layer over the plain layer, pressing firmly and evenly. Allow the homemade Rice Krispie treats to cool, then cut into 9 squares.

Strawberry Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats

Ingredients
- 6 cups Rice Krispies
- 60 Marshmallows
- 4 ½ tablespoons Butter
- ¼ cup Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
- 1 package Freeze Dried Strawberries
- Red Food Coloring, optional
Instructions
- Grease an 8×8 in square pan with butter.
- Place 1 ½ tablespoon of butter and 20 marshmallows in a medium size saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until the marshmallows and butter are completely melted.
- Add in the chocolate chips and continue to stir until completely melted and thoroughly incorporated in the marshmallows. The entire mixture should be brown.
- Remove from heat and fold in two cups of Rice Krispies until completely coated.
- Press the mixture into the bottom of your prepared pan. I like to coat my hands with butter so that the mixture doesn’t stick. You can also use a spatula if you don’t want to use your hands.
- In a clean pan, melt another 20 marshmallows and 1 ½ Tbsp butter over medium heat stirring frequently until the marshmallows and butter are melted completely. Remove from the heat and pour in 2 cups of Rice Krispies and stir until the cereal is completely covered.
- Press this mixture evenly across the top of the chocolate mixture, pressing firmly.
- Now place the freeze dried strawberries in a food processor and process until very finely ground.
- In a clean pan mix together the last 20 marshmallows and 1 ½ tablespoon of butter and melt over medium heat, stirring frequently. Once melted stir in ground strawberries until well incorporated. If a deeper red color is desired you can add a little bit of red food coloring) Stir until well mixed.
- Add in the final 2 cups of Rice Krispies and stir until completely coated.
- Press the strawberry layer on top of the vanilla layer, pressing firmly and evenly.
- Allow to cool completely before cutting.
- Cut into 9 squares and enjoy! Store in an airtight container.
