Why this Maple Roasted Brussels Sprouts Recipe is a Keeper

I love this recipe for maple roasted brussel sprouts because not only is it quick and easy, it’s also incredibly delicious.

  • Converts Haters: Multiple sources and user reviews state that this recipe has the power to turn even the staunchest Brussels sprout critics into fans. The combination of sweet and savory flavors, along with a crispy texture, makes they are irresistible.
  • Easy and Quick: The recipe is consistently described as “fuss-free,” “quick,” and “ridiculously easy.” With minimal prep and a relatively short roasting time, it’s a great last-minute sheet pan side dish for weeknight dinners or a busy holiday meal.
  • Perfect Balance of Flavors: The recipe hits all the right notes: the sweetness of the maple syrup beautifully balances the natural bitterness of the Brussels sprouts. The addition of other ingredients like Dijon mustard, balsamic vinegar, or a pinch of red chili flakes adds a layer of savory, tangy, or spicy complexity.

How Do I Get my Brussels Sprouts Crispy?

To ensure the brussels sprouts come out crispy, you should put them in a hot oven. Be sure to also not drench them in syrup so that they’re not too soggy.

Variations and Substitutions for this Easy Side Dish Recipe

This recipe is super easy to customize. I like to take it to the next level by using different ingredients or trying different flavors.

  • Maple Syrup Alternatives: Try honey or agave for a similar sweetness, instead of maple syrup.
  • Savory Flavor: Add bacon, a few cloves of minced garlic, chopped shallots, or smoked paprika.
  • Sweet and Spicy: For a kick, toss in a pinch of red chili flakes, cayenne pepper, or a dash of sriracha.
  • Herbs: Fresh or dried herbs like rosemary or thyme work well.
  • Tangy: A splash of balsamic vinegar or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice at the end can cut through the sweetness.

Prep Ahead Suggestions for Vegan Brussel Sprouts

Preparing steps in a recipe ahead of time can be the best way to go to be able to make it and enjoy it whenever.

  • Wash and Trim: Wash and trim the Brussels sprouts a day or two in advance. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • Pre-Roast: Some recipes suggest roasting the sprouts a day ahead. When ready to serve, drizzle the maple syrup on and pop them back in the oven for a quick re-crisping and to caramelize the glaze.

Alternate Cooking Methods to Love this Recipe

This recipe is best oven roasted, but here’s how to switch it up.

  • Stovetop: While roasting is the most common method for achieving a crispy texture, you can also pan-fry the sprouts in a skillet. This is a good option if you want to make a small batch.
  • Air Fry: Brussels sprouts in the air fryer is an excellent alternative for a quicker cooking time and is praised for making these roasted brussels sprouts extra-crispy results. Line your air fryer with a piece of parchment paper and add sprouts cut side down.

How to Store, Reheat and Use Leftovers

  • Store: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
  • Reheat: For best results and to regain crispiness, reheat the Brussels sprouts in the oven or an air fryer. The microwave can be used, but the texture may become soft.
  • Use Leftovers: Leftover maple glazed Brussels sprouts are great cold in salads or as a topping for a grain bowl.

Expert Tips for Making Maple Brussel Sprouts

  • Don’t Overcook: The sprouts should be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, not mushy. Watch them carefully, especially toward the end of the cooking time.
  • Real Maple Syrup is Key: This is a recurring tip across multiple recipes. The quality of your maple syrup will significantly impact the final flavor.
  • Season to Taste: The basic recipe is a great starting point, but don’t be afraid to adjust the salt, pepper, and other seasonings to your preference.
  • Timing the Glaze: Some recipes advise adding the glaze halfway through roasting to prevent the sugars from burning, while others mix everything at once. Either way, keep an eye on the sprouts to avoid a charred result.
  • Serve With: Serve with Green Beans with Slivered Almonds, Baked Sweet Potato Fries or Maple Bacon Crack.
