Ingredient Notes
- Box Cake Mix: We recommend using a white cake mix as the base for these cupcakes. The white cake provides a light and fluffy texture that complements the cookies and cream flavor well. The cake mix has all the dry ingredients mixed for you including the baking powder.
- Oreo Sandwich Cookies: These iconic chocolate sandwich cookies are the star ingredient in this recipe. When crushing your Oreos, you want to ensure they are finely crushed so the piping of the frosting goes smoothly.

Bake the cupcakes to the baking time according to the box directions ( until a toothpick comes out clean) remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool completely to room temperature.

First place 10 Oreos into a food processor and blitz until Oreos are fine crumbs or crush Oreo cookies by placing them in a zip-top bag and crush them. In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer cream the butter until smooth. Then add in the powdered sugar 1 cup at a time and mix between each cup. Add the vanilla extract and milk and mix until well combined until frosting forms. Finally, add the fine Oreo pieces and mix one last time.
Step 3: Oreo Buttercream Frosting
Place your favorite piping tip into a piping bag and spoon the cookies and cream icing into the bag. Frost your cupcakes and then top each cupcake with remaining oreos.

Christina’s Notes
- Use paper cupcake liners: They make the cupcakes easier to remove from the pan and make them convenient to handle.
- For a lower-sugar option: Use a lower-sugar cake mix or cookie mix, as suggested in the source.
- For extra decoration: Garnish the frosted cupcakes with mini Oreo cookies or additional crushed Oreo crumbs.
- Make sure the cupcakes are completely cool before piping on the frosting so the frosting holds its shape.
- Process the Oreo cookies used for the frosting into very fine crumbs. Larger pieces can make the frosting more difficult to pipe smoothly.
- Scale the recipe: Simply adjust the serving size in the recipe card and the ingredients will update automatically.
- Make your own All Purpose Seasoning: When a recipe calls for All Purpose Seasoning, you can use my homemade All Purpose Seasoning recipe or substitute salt and pepper to taste.
- Meat doneness: I always use a meat thermometer to test for doneness when cooking meat.
- Use unsalted butter: I use unsalted butter so I can control the salt level in the recipe.
- Preheat the oven: Unless otherwise noted, always preheat your oven before baking.
