I was very disappointed in this. I used 48 frozen pierogis and 1 butter and 2 medium onions. Added on top kielbasa Oscar Meyer. Low 5 hours. Some were cooked, some clumped together. Too dry. Added 1 cup chicken broth to cook for 1 hour. Would not do again. Did not even serve this thanksgiving. Vert disappointed. Would do on stove and keep warm in crockpot
Lol, weird that you didn’t actually follow the recipe and are claiming the recipe is bad…!
I agree 100%. Recipe there for a reason unless stated otherwise.
I want to try this today for thanksgiving dinner but I’m so afraid they will just end one one big glob of mush…..please re-assure lol
I tossed the frozen perogies in melted butter first, to help avoid them sticking together. I put cooked bacon pieces on top.
What a great idea! I love the ease of making these in the crockpot. This is a great weeknight dinner.
I’ve never made these and a slow cooker seems like the way to start! Thanks for the recipe.
I had no idea pierogi could be made in the slow cooker! We absolutely loved these and I’m excited at how simple it is to make. Thanks!
Made this tonight, was delish!!! I will try the onions on the bottom next time. I put in layers (used 24 pierogi) and was good. Onions didn’t all brown, but still cooked and soft. Flavor is amazing!
Thank you for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it!
If I placed 2 boxes of perogi in the slow cooker would I then use 1 cup butter instead of 1/2 cup?
Yes
I never thought to cook pierogies this way. What a fun idea.
So delish! One of my friends makes her pierogi in a crockpot too! Great idea!
I love the idea of making pierogies in a slow cooker! so easy and delicious.
Mmm yes please! I would love to try to make these!
This recipe looks delicious. I have never made this before. I need to spread my cooking wings.
I’d like to add kielbasa in with the piroghi. Should the time be increased or would I need to perhaps add some chicken stock to accommodate the added volume?
You can use the same cooking time.
Do you put the butter and onions on top of the pierogi, or on the bottom?
I put them on the bottom, but I’m sure either way would work just fine.
I was curious about this too. Video shows layering as onions, butter than pierogies, but pictures (3) different. But like you indicated doesn’t make differance which way layered.
Can you leave the perogi in the crock pot to stay warm if you were bringing it to a pot luck?
Yes, ma’am! 🙂
Do they turn out cripsy and brown as shown in the picture using the crockpot?
All of the recipes I post on my site are the actual photos from when I make the recipes. I don’t “fake” the photos for styling purposes. In this case, the pierogies came out of the slow cooker, were put right in the bowl and then photographed. The ones that were touching the crock, got the browned edges. My recommendation would be to put them in a single layer in the bottom of the crock so that you get maximum browning. I hope this helps 🙂
Hi Christina,
Is it 1/2 cup butter or 2 cups?
1/2 cup
Can you use fresh instead of frozen and if so how long do you cook them for. Also does it matter what flavor the pierogis are
I wouldn’t use fresh for this recipe…frozen is best. The flavor doesn’t matter 🙂
1 box ain’t gonna do it. Will this recipe handle a full crockpot of pierogi? At least 4-6 boxes? What would the cooking time be?
I think as long as your slow cooker is big enough so it’s not over-full. I would cook them for at least 6 hours.
At any point in time do you stir. My recipe, very similar to yours, worked the first time. I put margarine on each layer with cooked onions and bacon. They turned out great. The second time not so great. Thought I did the same thing but they came out in one great big blob. What should I do different.
Thanks
I do not stir, just set and forget. Here are somethings to check… Did you use frozen pierogies both times? Did you exceed the 3-4 hour cooking time? Did you have your slow cooker set to low?
It’s “pierogi”, singular and plural.
Thanks for letting this Italian Norwegian know 🙂 I will update the recipe!
I think there are more important things to think about than the way somone spells Pieogri
