  • Flour: All purpose flour. We use King Arthur flour in this recipe.
  • Brown Sugar: Light brown sugar but also try dark brown sugar for a richer, deeper flavor.
  • Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon enhances the cinnamon flavor.
  • Butter: Real butter ruly enhances the flavor and texture of the scones.
  • Cinnamon chips: Find cinnamon chips in the baking isle next to the chocolate chips.
  • Half and half: You can also use heavy cream or buttermilk for this recipe.
  • Baking Powder: Make sure that baking powder is fresh.

Variations and Substitutions to Make Cinnamon Scones

  • Sprinkle: Mix cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar on top of the scone..
  • Icing: Create an icing or glaze and drizzle on top of the scones to give them a more cinnamon roll taste.
  • White Chocolate Chips: You will love this recipe if you add some white chocolate chips along with the cinnamon chips.

How to Make this Cinnamon Chip Scone Recipe

This cinnamon scone recipe is one of the best scones I’ve ever made. You will make the scones again and again.

These are the basic steps for making the best scones. Refer to the full, printable recipe card below for detailed instructions.

Making the dough for the scones.

Step 1: LINE A LARGE BAKING SHEET AND MIX DRY INGREDIENTS

First, preheat the oven and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a baking mat. Then begin by combining the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder and the salt.

Step 2: BUTTER

Next, cut in the butter until the mixture forms pea-sized pieces. 

Step 3: CHIPS

Then add the cinnamon chips and stir to combine.

Step 4: MIX THE WET INGREDIENTS AND MAKE THE DOUGH

Next, in a separate bowl, whisk together the half and half, vanilla extract and the egg.  Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. The scone dough will be somewhat wet.

Step 5: MAKE SCONES AND BAKING TIME

Finally, place scones onto parchment lined baking sheet. Use your fingers to shape the scones. Lastly, bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Allow to cool on a cooling rack.

Of course, you can make homemade cinnamon chips if you like. Especially if you can not find them in the store.

Store the scones in an airtight container.  Scones last around 2 days stored in an airtight container at room temperature. If storing scones in the fridge they will last for about a week.

This is an excellent recipe to double for a brunch party or to freeze for longer.

Fresh scones are great however you can freeze scones. Scones in the freezer will last about six months.

  • Stud the Scones: Studded with cinnamon chips on top of the scones for a great appearance.
  • Dried Fruit: Try adding raisins, dried cranberries or other fruit to the scones with cinnamon chips.
  • Brush: Using a pastry brush, brush the scones with heavy cream. Heavy whipping cream will help brown up the tops.
  • Freeze: Freeze you butter and use a box grader to shred.
  • Warm: This is a great recipe to serve warm scone. Top with jam, butter, or clotted cream.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups Flour
  • ½ cup Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
