What are the differences between yams and sweet potatoes?

A platter of the finished side dish.

In case you were wondering, yams and sweet potatoes are NOT the same thing. They’re not related to each other and they’re different in their taste, texture and appearance.

With some exceptions, “yams” in the U.S. are really orange sweet potatoes. A big difference is that true yams have a bark-like texture, as sweet potatoes do not. Another major difference is that sweet potatoes are much sweeter than yams.

Maple Roasted Sweet Potatoes FAQs

Yes! Unless you’d like to have the skins on, go ahead and peel all the potatoes.

I like to use real maple syrup for the richer flavor but use whatever you like.

When you’re picking out sweet potatoes, look for ones that are firm and smooth with no cuts or cracks.

Store them in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. You can reheat in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time or heat the oven to 350 degrees and bake for about 15 minutes.

You can prep the potatoes ahead of time! Peel, trim and slice them and store them in the fridge in an airtight container. You could also roast your walnuts ahead of time.

Expert Tips for Making This Melting Potato Recipe

  • This Recipe Can be Doubled: If you’re doubling this recipe make sure you have a large enough baking sheet to fit all of the potatoes on. If not, split into 2 groups and roast one group at a time.
  • Nuts: If you’re not a fan of walnuts, try pecans or hazelnuts instead; Or don’t use any if you are worried about allergies.
  • Brown Sugar: Try tossing your candied walnuts in brown sugar for some added sweetness.
  • Topping: Try topping with fresh herbs like fresh thyme, rosemary or parsley.
  • Glaze: Again, if you’re concerned about nuts try a maple, honey or brown sugar glaze.
  • Vegetarian: To make this vegetarian friendly, make these oven roasted sweet potatoes with olive oil. Also, replace the chicken stock with vegetable stock.
  • Sugar Free Syrup: If you don’t want overly sweet potatoes, or want to make them sweet and savory, try using a sugar free syrup instead of pure maple syrup.
