How do I pick the freshest iceberg lettuce?

A plate with lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese on it.

When selecting iceberg lettuce, look for lettuce heads that are light or medium green in color. The leaves should show no sign of browning or wilting, and the lettuce head should be compact and firm. Freshness is key for that satisfying crunch. Avoid any heads with brown spots or a pungent smell, as these are signs of decay. There are some more tips and tricks for picking lettuce.
