Ingredient Notes to Make this Prosciutto-Wrapped Asparagus Appetizer

Left: Bunch of fresh green asparagus on a white background. Right: Plate of thinly sliced prosciutto wrapped asparagus on a black cloth, with a knife and pepper mill in the background.
  • Asparagus: Drizzle the asparagus with olive oil or add some minced garlic or salt and pepper. Use 16 stalks of asparagus to make this recipe.
  • Thin Slices of Prosciutto: This thin Italian ham is crispy when baked in the oven and has a salty taste. Use 16 slices of prosciutto. Prosciutto is a little delicate, so make sure you’re careful when you wrap it around the asparagus.

Wrapping the vegetables in the deli meat.

1. Wrap the Asparagus

First, preheat oven to 450 degrees and cut each slice of prosciutto in half. Then dry the asparagus. After you’ve cut the meat slices in half, wrap one slice of prosciutto around each asparagus spear, starting at the bottom and working your way to the top. Next, place the wrapped asparagus in a single layer on the sheet pan.

2. Bake the Prosciutto Asparagus

Repeat the process with remaining asparagus and strips of prosciutto, then drizzle olive oil or cooking oil on top of the asparagus on the baking sheet. Bake for a cooking time of 5 minutes on each side, until the prosciutto is done, and the asparagus is tender, then serve immediately once it’s ready.

Expert Tips for Making This Roast Asparagus Recipe

  • Trim: The best way to trim the woody ends of the asparagus is to hold the stalk near the bottom in one hand and about half way up in the other hand. Gently bend the stalk until it snaps. Line up the rest of the asparagus with that stalk and trim.
  • Cheese: Top the asparagus stalks with freshly grated parmesan cheese, then add the asparagus to a serving platter.
  • Temperature: This is a great recipe to serve warm or at room temperature.
  • Balsamic: In addition to the olive oil, feel free to drizzle the asparagus stalks with balsamic glaze. You can also sprinkle on some lemon zest and garlic powder, or a squeeze of lemon juice.

My hubby loves asparagus, I have made it wrapped in bacon, but I think the thin prosciutto looks much easier.
