Why this Air Fryer Chickpea Recipe is a Keeper
I love this recipe because it’s a quick, inexpensive and easy snack to make for your family at any time. It is even great for game day!
- Effortless Crispiness: The air fryer transforms humble canned chickpeas into delightfully crunchy bites without excessive oil. You get that satisfying texture that’s hard to achieve in the oven without constant monitoring.
- Quick Cooking Time: Compared to roasting, air frying chickpeas is significantly faster, making it a fantastic option for a quick snack or addition to a meal.
- Versatile Flavor Base: The neutral flavor of chickpeas makes them a blank canvas for a wide array of seasonings, from savory and spicy to even slightly sweet.
- Healthy and Satisfying: Chickpeas are packed with protein and fiber, making them a nutritious snack that keeps you feeling full. Pop in the air fryer for a better alternative to chips.
- Minimal Cleanup: Air fryer baskets are generally easier to clean than baking sheets coated in oil and seasonings.
Do I Need to Dry the Chickpeas Thoroughly?
Yes. If not been thoroughly dried, they will not crispen up nearly as well.
Avoid this Common Mistake for this Air Fryer Recipe
Air fryers work by circulating hot air around the food. If the basket is too full, the air can’t circulate effectively, leading to uneven cooking and steaming.
Ingredient Needed and Variation Suggestions and Seasoning Ideas
When you air fry the chickpeas, you will need just a couple additional ingredients, including an oil and spices.

- Indian Inspired: Mix garam masala, cumin, coriander, turmeric, and a touch of chili powder.
- Sweet and Spicy: Toss with a little olive oil, cinnamon, cumin, a pinch of cayenne, and a drizzle of maple syrup after cooking.
- Herbaceous: Add dried herbs like parsley, dill, or chives to your spice blend.
- Nutritional Yeast: For a cheesy, savory flavor, toss the cooked chickpeas with nutritional yeast.
- Different Oils: While they’re tasty with just olive oil, you can use avocado oil or coconut oil for subtle flavor variations.
- Other Beans: While the timing might vary slightly, this method can also work with other canned beans like cannellini or black beans for a similar crispy snack.

Prepping ahead of time can really help to save time and kitchen space if hosting a gathering.

Common Questions About This Vegan Cooked Chickpeas Recipe
If stored away from air, they should be crispy for about 2 days.
Sure. Rehydrate the dried peas in a large bowl. Before using, make sure to dry them well.
Yes, you can also make roasted chickpeas in the oven. Oven roasted chickpeas may take a few more minutes to crisp than making chickpeas in air fryer basket, but they will be just as crunchy.

please do not preheat airfryer with only parchment paper in it, as you recipe calls for. the airfryer can pull the parchment up into the heating coil and cause a fire. ask me how I know. please Change your instructions.
Sorry to hear that. Yes you do have to be careful with parchment paper. The rule of thumb is it is ok to use as long as you have something to hold it down. (The Food) never use with just the parchment paper inside.
These are such a great snack. I love chickpeas.
This tasted so amazing! Thanks a lot for sharing this super easy to make roasted chickpeas recipe! Fam really loves it! Will surely have this again! Highly recommended!
I still marvel at all that an air fryer simplifies. These chickpeas were a great snack!
Yum crunchy chick peas!!
Delicious!!! Wanted to eat the whole bowl but stopped myself. Using the airfryer was so easy. To get them as crunchy as I wanted I just kept taking them out and shaking them around til I liked the way they looked. Can’t wait to try some other seasonings.
Hi There,
I just finished making the chickpeas, as per ur instructions, but turned out so hard, difficult to bite into with difficulty, scared of breaking our teeth….
Would like to know where did I go wrong?
I used a bag of dry chickpeas from an Indian Rashan store & felt no need to pay dry, since dried already , and followed the instructions.
No where do u mention to soak them first etc?????
Please if u can response since I love chickpeas, as a munching snack
😊 🙏
As the recipe clearly states, you should have used CANNED chickpeas. Dried chickpeas will not work in this recipe.
Oooohhhh. What do you recommend for pizza flavored seasonings??
I think basil and oregano would be delish and maybe sprinkle a little parmesan cheese at the end.
ok the recipe is not clear. Do you cook for 20 min, then 5 more min. then spray with oil or do you cook 5 min. then spray with oil and continue cooking for a total of 20 min. or do you cook for 20 min, wait 5 min. then spray with oil. The recipe does not make sense.
Cook at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. After 5 minutes, open air fryer and spray chickpeas with nonstick cooking spray.
Continue cooking; Stirring chickpeas every 5 minutes.
Just finished making these made, and I do mean made in the pas tense, They turned out so good I put on a movie and finished my whole bowl before I noticed. They were so easy so delicious.
I am glad you enjoyed them so much thank you for your feedback!
I followed this recipe as directed (except did not use coriander I don’t like). Chickpeas are DELICIOUS and crispy! Definitely will be making weekly. I’m just going to experiment with different seasoning. Thank you❤️
So happy you enjoyed them! Let me know what new seasonings you try.
While I love the crunch of these chickpeas, I didn’t care for the seasoning. I felt like it was missing something and I couldn’t taste anything but the chili powder. I feel like the fine seasoning stuck and the salt did not…because it did not taste salty enough. And to add more salt after its finished cooking, is pointless. It falls off.
Thanks for your feedback we are always looking for ways to make our recipes better.
Try celery salt. Add it to your other seasonings of your choice and mix well. Then toss your chickpeas in the mix.
Any how-to directions using dried garbanzo beans?
I don’t believe this recipe would work with dried garbanzos unless you softened them and then dried them.
Can you use dried chick peas after soaking overnight?
I have not tried it, but I don’t see why not. Let me know how you make out if you try it.
Even if you overnight-soak the beans, they obviously still need cooking! An Instant Pot or indeed any pressure cooker does this in about 13-15 minutes. Then dry them, then air fry them until crispy.
My mom swears by her air fryer but I wasn’t convinced until I saw this post -ordering one now because I need these crunchy chickpeas in my life!!!
We eat chickpeas all the time. I usually have to dry them in the oven. I had no idea about the Mealthy Crisp. This is awesome and I’m ordering one today. I love that it can be added to my pressure cooker.
I love roasted chickpeas and never thought to use my airfryer. These were so easy and delicious.
What a delicious looking snack! I have only ever used chickpeas in hummus but have never roasted it before. Thanks so much for sharing!
I love this recipe for roasted chickpeas. The seasoning flavors are really good. They came out very crispy thanks to your tips.
