How to Make Easy Mexican 5 Layer Dip

These are the basic steps for making this appetizer dip. Refer to the full, printable recipe card below for detailed instructions.

Three-step process showing: ground beef being cooked and the layers being built.

1. Cook the Beef

In a large skillet, cook ground beef and drain excess fat. Add 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of the taco seasoning, all purpose seasoning, and water to the cooked beef to make the first layer. Stir together and spread beef mixture in an even layer onto the bottom of a 9×13 casserole dish for the 1st layer.

2. Add a Layer of Beans and Cheese

In a small, microwave safe bowl, microwave refried beans for 30 seconds to make the bean layer. Stir beans and cream cheese together and spread the bean mixture in an even layer on top of the beef layer.

3. Make the Sour Cream Layer and Add the Guacamole

In a separate bowl combine sour cream, remaining 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of taco seasoning and remaining teaspoon of all purpose seasoning. Spread seasoned cheese mixture evenly on top of the bean mixture and spread the layer of guacamole on top of the cheese for the 5th layer.

Three bowls showcasing a 5 Layer Dip: first brimming with cheese and herbs, second with ripe tomatoes, and third mixing tomatoes and black olives. All arranged elegantly on a light surface.

4. Top the 5-Layer Dip
