- Avocado: Use ripe hass avocados to make the best guacamole. To remove the pit, cut the avocados in half and carefully remove the pit with a spoon. You can also use a spoon to scoop the flesh out of the skin.
- Pico de Gallo: I like to make my own Pico de Gallo, but you can also use store-bought.
- Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice is best to bring a bright, citrusy flavor.
- Lime Substitute: While lime is traditional, in a pinch, you can use lemon juice. The flavor will be slightly different but still provide the necessary acidity.
- Spice it Up: Add finely diced jalapeño, serrano pepper, or a pinch of cayenne pepper for heat. You can also use a dash of your favorite hot sauce.
- Add Onion and Garlic: Finely minced red onion or white onion, and minced garlic cloves, add a savory depth.
- Tomato: Diced ripe tomato adds sweetness and texture. For less watery guacamole, remove the seeds.
- Fruit: Diced mango or pineapple can provide a sweet and tropical twist.
- Herbs: Experiment with other fresh herbs like parsley or chives.
- Creaminess Boost: A dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt can make the guacamole extra creamy if that’s the desired consistency.
- Nutritional Yeast: For a cheesy, umami flavor (and a vegan option), try adding a teaspoon or two of nutritional yeast to 4-ingredients guacamole.
- Cilantro: Try using a small amount of finely chopped cilantro on top of the guacamole as a garnish.

- Chopping Cilantro: Cilantro can be washed and chopped a day ahead and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- Squeezing Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.

Common Recipe FAQs
The best way to tell if an avocado is ripe is to go off of texture. The riper the avocado is, the softer it will feel when gently squeezed. You should never feel dents or a mushy texture when picking a good avocado.
Guacamole turns brown when it has contact with air. A great way to prevent browning is to immediately toss it generously with extra lime juice, ensuring all the surface area is coated. Store as soon as possible.
If stored properly, this simple to prepare perfect dip will last for 3-5 days.
Place in a freezer bag, pushing out all the air, or store in an airtight container. The guacamole dip will last in the freezer for up to 6 months.
Expert Tips for Making the Homemade Guacamole
- Use Ripe Avocados: This is the most crucial step for delicious guacamole. Underripe avocados will be hard and lack flavor, while overripe ones will be mushy.
- Don’t Over-Mash: Some texture is desirable in copycat chipolte guacamole. Mash the avocados until they are mostly smooth but still have some small chunks.
- Taste and Adjust: After adding the basic ingredients, taste the guacamole and adjust the lime juice and salt to your preference.
- Use Fresh Lime Juice: Bottled lime juice lacks the bright, fresh flavor of freshly squeezed lime.
- Gently Fold in Add-Ins: If you’re adding other ingredients like onions or tomatoes, gently fold them into the mashed avocado to avoid over-mashing.
- Serve Immediately (or with precautions): For the best flavor and appearance, serve guacamole soon after making it. If you need to hold it, follow the prep-ahead tips for minimizing browning.
- Serve With: Serve with Baked Tortilla Chips, on a Mexican Burger or with other delicious dips like tomato salsa or Crock Pot Queso Dip.

Can guacamole be made without cilantro? I do not like this herb at all makes food taste like dish soap! 🤤 Is there a substitute for cilantro?
You could easily substitute chopped parsley if you’re not a fan of cilantro. Or, feel free to leave it out all together.
Hi switch cilantro to basil which is lovely, enjoy.
Thank you for the feedback will definitely need to try that.
